The main types of Doves and Pigeons
We used to simply call them pigeons or doves, depending on local customs, but each species has its own characteristicsPigeon, Columba Livia
This is a type of Columbide, is fairly widespread and includes numerous types of pigeon (domestic and wild). They are descended from semi-wild pigeons and are common both in Italy and abroad, typically seen in the streets of big cities. Similar in appearance to the wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) they are distinguished by :
– The lack of white spots around the neck
– A brown beak instead of red and yellow
– The lack of a white line on the upper wing
– A white rump
– They are slightly smaller
The main types of Doves and Pigeons
It is a tough bird and fast in flight. The lifespan of a common pigeon ranges from 3 to 5 years in the wild, but can reach 15 years for domesticated breeds. In Italian cities, as in many other European cities, it is ubiquitous, especially in squares and parks. This often increases the need for interventions. The pigeon is a seed-eater, so its diet consists of cereals and legumes. There are many varieties, with different colours and bodyshapes. Among the more common Italian varieties are: Ascolano , Bergamasco , Fiorentino , seabream of Parma, Piacenza , Reggianino , Romagnolo , Romano , Sottobanca , Triganino Modenese and the Traveling Italian.

Pigeon/Columba palumbus
This is a species of the Dove (Columbidae) family. It is the largest, most common and most widespread species of pigeon in Europe. It is from 40 to 42 cm long and, therefore, substantially larger than the Columba livia. Its wingspan ranges from 75 to 80 cm and can weigh from 460 to 570 grams. The sexes are similar: the head and back are bluish and the tail and wing tips dark. The chest is a light pinkish-grey. During flight, you can see the white cross bands on top of the wings which are the main way to distinguish this bird from the similar species, the common pigeon and dove. Despite the slightly rotund body, its flight is fast, direct and above all allows the pigeon to change direction without hesitation and suddenly flee in case of need. When they soar, they produce a loud noise. Their call is a very distinctive ” dùùùù du- du -du -du … ” and is easily confused with the lure of the Turtledove .
They are distinguishable from the Livia by :
-The presence of white spots around the neck
– The presence of transverse bands on top of the wing, clearly visible in flight from above
– Red and yellow beak
– The absence of the white rump
– They are slightly larger
They are distinguishable from the dove by:
– The absence of two dark bars on the wings
– The presence of the two white bars
– The white spots around the neck
– They are larger
