URBAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE
A pigeon produces about 2.5 kg of faeces per year, the result of which produces the urban decay that we all recognise: buildings, streets, monuments, sills and pavements smeared with excrement. The excrement itself has a corrosive action on monuments and the like and the results can be seen where some have been eroded away to almost nothing. The type of corrosion is determined by the nature of the micro-organisms that develop on the substrate after the fecal emission (bacteria, yeasts, molds). These are responsible for the rapid lowering of the pH level by the production of organic and inorganic acids (sulfuric acid). In addition, the fungal hyphae penetrate the micro-cracks also causing a mechanical disruption.
