Pigeons can carry around sixty diseases, some of which are contagious and can be fatal. In any flock of birds, ectoparasites are always present: fleas, bedbugs, ticks and mites, which often cause entrenched infestations in buildings where there are nests, notably in attics.

For them to be dangerous, direct contact is not necessary – the wind, vacuum cleaners and fans can all carry the infected droppings’ dry powder into homes, restaurants, offices, hospitals and schools, contaminating food, utensils, linens, and triggering infections. All pigeon flocks carry ectoparasites, especially fleas, bedbugs, ticks (argas reflexus) and mites. Floors soiled by droppings, guano and carcasses can contaminate the environment and are a source of serious sanitation problems, since these insects in turn become disease carriers.

What can be done to deter pigeons
The pigeon is considered a pet like a dog or a cat and as a result they are protected by law. According to law n.968 of 12/27/1972, these birds are “good for the environment ” and ” part of the national heritage”, so without legal permission from the relevant authority (USL), pigeons can not be captured, much less poisoned or exterminated, unless authorized by the state. However, pigeons can be deterred from entering certain areas, and this is the primary objective of any control campaign.
